Will I get other skin cancers?

After having one skin cancer, statistics show that you have a higher chance of developing a second skin cancer.

You should have your skin checked by your referring dermatologist at least once a year. Lifetime annual check ups are considered essential.

How do I protect myself from the sun?

AVOID THE SUN
Avoid outdoor activities between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when the sun’s rays are strongest.  Remember you can still get a sunburn on cloudy days!

COVER UP
Wear loose-fitting, tightly woven fabrics that protect against UVA/UVB rays, hats with a wide wide brim, and UV – protected sunglasses. Some companies for UV protective-wear include: Coolibar, Cabana Life, Mott 50.

USE SUNSCREEN
Sunscreens work by absorbing or reflecting the sun’s rays and are labeled with a SPF (sun protection factor) number. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects against UVA and UVB rays and has a minimum SPF of 30. Apply sunscreen 30 minutes before going outdoors and reapply every 2 hours. Cover every exposed surface, and don't forget your ears, scalp, lips, and front and back of the hands and neck. Also apply under thin clothing such as T-shirts or polo shirts.
